While it is usually preferable to keep your natural teeth as long as possible, there are several reasons the dentist may recommend removing a tooth entirely from the socket in your jaw. This is called an extraction.
- Your jaw may not have enough room to accommodate the tooth. If not removed, it could become impacted. As a result food can accumulate around the impacted tooth and consequently become painful. This is the primary reason why many people have their wisdom teeth removed.
- The tooth may impair the ability of surrounding teeth to come in properly. Children occasionally need to have a largely decayed baby tooth removed.
- Sometimes a tooth may reach such a serious state of decay that no repair can fix it. In this case the only option is extraction.
